Professional Aluminum Oxide Crystals: Quality You Can See in the Treatment

Not all microdermabrasion crystals perform the same. Purity, particle size, consistency, and crystal structure directly influence how smoothly and predictably crystals move through a professional microdermabrasion system.

Skin for Life 99.6% Pure Aluminum Oxide Crystals are selected for professional crystal microdermabrasion treatments where controlled exfoliation and consistent treatment performance matter.

Our crystals feature a 120-micron grit and a hard, angular structure designed to effectively lift accumulated surface cells as they travel across the skin under controlled vacuum pressure. This combination gives the esthetician the ability to progressively resurface the skin while adjusting treatment intensity according to skin condition, sensitivity, and treatment goals.

Why Crystal Quality Matters in Microdermabrasion

Professional microdermabrasion depends on more than vacuum pressure. The quality of the abrasive media affects the consistency of the treatment.

Poorly graded crystals can contain an inconsistent mixture of particle sizes or excessive fine particles. Skin for Life Aluminum Oxide Crystals undergo controlled processing and sizing to provide a more uniform professional treatment medium.

The result is predictable crystal flow and consistent exfoliation from treatment to treatment.

99.6% Purity for Professional Performance

Skin for Life Aluminum Oxide Crystals are 99.6% pure and undergo a specialized washing process designed to reduce residual soda and metallic iron content.

Aluminum oxide is an inert, extremely hard material. Its hardness allows the crystals to maintain their abrasive properties during professional resurfacing rather than breaking down easily during treatment.

For the esthetician, this provides the controlled mechanical exfoliation needed to address the appearance of:

  • Rough and uneven skin texture
  • Fine lines and visible signs of aging
  • Sun-damaged and dull-looking skin
  • Uneven-looking pigmentation
  • Superficial imperfections and the appearance of certain scars
  • Accumulated surface cells that interfere with smoothness and radiance

Precisely Graded 120-Micron Crystals

Particle size matters.

Skin for Life uses 120-micron aluminum oxide crystals, a commonly used professional grit size for crystal microdermabrasion equipment.

Controlled sizing helps create a more uniform flow through the machine and allows the esthetician to control resurfacing primarily through professional technique—including vacuum pressure, number of passes, handpiece movement, and treatment frequency—rather than dealing with unpredictable variations in the abrasive material.

Reduced Dust for a Cleaner Treatment Environment

Skin for Life Aluminum Oxide Crystals undergo controlled milling and sizing to remove excessive ultra-fine particles.

Reducing these fines helps minimize the amount of airborne crystal dust generated during normal equipment operation while supporting cleaner, more consistent crystal delivery through the microdermabrasion system.

Consistency From One Treatment to the Next

Our crystals are manufactured to FEPA abrasive grading standards, helping maintain tightly controlled particle sizing and lot-to-lot consistency.

That consistency matters in the treatment room.

When an esthetician develops a successful microdermabrasion protocol, the abrasive media should not become an uncontrolled variable. Consistent crystal quality helps the professional reproduce treatment technique and make appropriate adjustments based on the client’s skin—not inconsistencies in the crystals.

More Than Machine Microdermabrasion

Skin for Life Aluminum Oxide Crystals can also be incorporated into selected professional manual exfoliation protocols.

When appropriate for the client’s skin condition, crystals may be combined with a Skin for Life milk cleanser to create a controlled manual exfoliation treatment. This gives professionals another way to incorporate mechanical exfoliation when full crystal microdermabrasion is not being performed.

Always evaluate the client’s skin before treatment and adjust the amount of exfoliation accordingly.

Professional Resurfacing Starts With the Abrasive Media

Your microdermabrasion machine provides the vacuum and delivery system. The crystals perform the physical resurfacing.

Choosing high-purity, consistently graded professional crystals helps protect the quality of the treatment you are delivering.

99.6% purity. 120-micron professional grit. Reduced fines. Consistent grading. Reliable resurfacing treatment after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Professional Aluminum Oxide Crystals

Fact #1 Why does Skin for Life use 99.6% pure aluminum oxide crystals?

Purity matters because the aluminum oxide crystal is the abrasive material actually performing the resurfacing during crystal microdermabrasion.

Skin for Life chooses 99.6% pure aluminum oxide that undergoes a specialized washing process to reduce residual soda and metallic iron content. This provides estheticians with a clean, highly consistent abrasive medium rather than relying on lower-grade material with greater variability in its composition.

But purity is only part of the equation. Professional performance also depends on particle size, shape, grading, and the amount of ultra-fine material present in the finished product.

For the esthetician, the goal is consistency: when vacuum pressure and technique remain the same, the crystals should perform predictably from one treatment to the next.

Fact #2 Why does Skin for Life choose a block-shaped crystal instead of a more irregular abrasive particle?

The shape of an abrasive particle influences how it interacts with a surface. Skin for Life chooses a blocky crystal structure to provide effective mechanical exfoliation while supporting a smoother, more controlled movement across the skin.

This distinction becomes important during professional microdermabrasion. The objective is not to aggressively scratch the skin. The objective is to progressively lift accumulated surface cells while maintaining control over the skin’s response.

Poorly controlled abrasive media containing highly inconsistent particle shapes and sizes can make exfoliation less predictable. An esthetician may compensate with technique, but the abrasive itself has already introduced another variable into the treatment.

Skin for Life’s philosophy is different: use a consistent abrasive medium and let the professional control the treatment.

Combined with appropriate vacuum pressure, handpiece movement, number of passes, and skin analysis, the block-shaped crystal supports an even resurfacing technique without intentionally creating excessive irritation or unnecessary redness.

Fact #3 What is the difference between consistently graded crystals and inexpensive or poorly manufactured crystals?

A container labeled “aluminum oxide” does not automatically tell an esthetician how consistently the material has been manufactured.

Lower-cost or inadequately controlled abrasive media may have wider variations in particle size, excessive fine particles, or inconsistent grain characteristics. Those differences can affect crystal flow and make mechanical exfoliation less predictable.

Skin for Life crystals are manufactured with controlled milling and sizing and are tightly graded for consistency. Our 120-grit crystals are selected to provide the professional with a repeatable abrasive medium treatment after treatment.

This is important because the esthetician should be making treatment adjustments according to the client’s skin condition and response—not compensating for inconsistent crystals.

When comparing microdermabrasion crystals, don’t shop by price per pound alone. Ask about purity, particle size, grain shape, grading standards, fines removal, and lot-to-lot consistency.

Fact #4 Why are excessive fine particles or crystal dust important when choosing microdermabrasion crystals?

Extremely small particles—or “fines”—can be created during abrasive manufacturing and processing. A professional microdermabrasion crystal should therefore be properly milled, sized, and classified before it reaches the treatment room.

Skin for Life uses a controlled milling and sizing process designed to remove excessive ultra-fine particles. Reducing unnecessary fines helps decrease airborne crystal dust during normal equipment operation and supports more consistent crystal movement through the microdermabrasion delivery system.

This is another reason two products both labeled “120 grit aluminum oxide” may not necessarily offer identical treatment characteristics.

Particle-size distribution and manufacturing consistency matter.

For a professional performing multiple microdermabrasion treatments, choosing a clean, consistently graded crystal isn’t simply about the client’s skin—it also contributes to a cleaner, more predictable treatment environment.

Fact #5 How can crystal quality help an esthetician achieve effective resurfacing without unnecessary redness?

Redness is not the measurement of a successful microdermabrasion treatment.

The professional goal is controlled surface exfoliation appropriate for the client’s skin, not creating inflammation simply to demonstrate that something happened.

Skin for Life’s 99.6% pure, block-shaped, consistently graded 120-grit aluminum oxide crystals give the esthetician a predictable abrasive medium. Treatment intensity can then be controlled through professional variables such as vacuum pressure, speed of movement, number and direction of passes, and treatment frequency.

This becomes especially important when treating skin that may be sensitive, compromised, or prone to visible pigmentation. Aggressive abrasion and unnecessary inflammation can work against the esthetician’s treatment objective.

Think of crystal quality as one part of treatment control:

Consistent crystal + appropriate vacuum + controlled passes + professional skin analysis = more intentional resurfacing.

The objective is smoother, more refined-looking skin—not excessive erythema, aggressive stripping, or unnecessary surface irritation.

This is my go to miracle masque. I use the cryo algae & booster pack after full face waxing, lymphatic drainage, peels, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning. It really helps reduce the redness after any treatment and it leaves the skin cool, firm and tone. Also, I love this masque because it also reduces puffiness around the eyes. So when I am completed with my treatment, my guest can leave looking fresh and bright.

I am beyond impressed with the Oxygen Infusion Gel phase 1 sensitive + LSS™ delivery system. I first started using this after full facial waxing. Upon application, it immediately reduced the redness and reduce any discomfort my client might have from the hair removal. This oxygen treatment has turned a facial waxing into a relaxing spa experience. I also used it post peel, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning.

In addition to reducing redness, it also leaves the skin feeling smooth and firm. And for the Floridian who has spent too much time in the sun, it also helped accelerate the healing and minimize the discomfort.
